CRANE ACCIDENT PREVENTION
Cranes: Accident Prevention Guide
Serious injuries can occur if cranes are not inspected or used properly on the construction site. Often, crane injuries happen after a worker is hit by an overhead load or caught within the crane’s swing radius. Many deaths from crane accidents occur after the boom of a crane or its load line hit an overhead power line.
Solutions:
- Inspect crane controls before use
- Check wire rope, hooks and chains for any damage
- Be informed of the load weight before using a crane
- Make sure the load weight does not exceed the maximum intended weight
- Do not move a load over employees
- Check rigging before use
- Lift the load several inches to check balance and brakes
- Barricade accessible areas within the crane’s swing radius
- Maintain a safe distance from electrical wires
