TRENCHING ACCIDENT PREVENTION
Trenching: Accident Prevention Guide
Trench collapses are one of the leading causes of construction injuries and fatalities. In fact, every year, an average of 70 people are killed in trenching accidents.
Solutions:
- Do not work in unprotected trenches
- Use protective systems in trenches
- Hire a professional engineer to create a protective system for trenches 20 feet deep or greater
- Always provide a way to escape a trench, such as ramp or ladder, no more than 25 feet away from workers
- Keep spoils two feet away from the edge of a trench
- Ensure that trenches are inspected before use or after any hazardous event such as a rainstorm
